Default Vibration/shaking while braking 55+ MPH?

Hows it going.

About 6 months ago I replaced the rear drum brake hardware and shoes. I did not replace the drums or the cylinders. Last week I was switching out my winter/summer wheels/tires and noticed the rear passenger wheel cylinder was blown out so I replaced driver and passenger side. I did not disassemble the brakes again, just loosened one spring, slipped the cylinder out/in and bleed them.

As a result, The Jeep brakes wonderfully now around town but if I hit the brakes going over 55 mph the Jeep shakes. There is no pulsating in the brake pedal and as I slow down to 40ish mph it goes away.

What could be causing this?

do you have them adjusted too tight causing excess heat therefore causing the vibration ?

You mentioned that you were switching to winter wheels and tires from summer, could it be a balance problem with one of the tires? Maybe try switching back and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you know the winters may just need to be inspected and re-balanced.

Well, from what you describe, it's your brakes. Overtightening lug nut (or differences in torque) can warp rotors. Perhaps the calipers are stuck/binding and warped the rotors. Only takes one trip down the road. Pick up a dial indicator and magnetic base at Harbor Freight (or wherever), and check your rotors for run-out.

Also, it's possible there's a piece of debris or rust , etc under one of the drums you removed. Check the axle flange to drum mating surface. Let us know what it is..

Hard to describe.. but I've had various vibrations/shaking from the front end and this feels more like a rear end.

I had driven on the winter tires for a couple weeks prior to getting around to swapping the wheel cylinder, but I guess a weight could have been knocked off. Ill check

If it only happens when the brakes are applied - it is not a wheel balance problem.

My guess is that the rear brake pads are not making constant/even contact with the inner surface of the drum. It is probably only contacting the spinning drum in one spot, causing a shake. Now that the rear brake is working again, it has brought this problem to the surface.

My apologies, not trying to steer anybody wrong. When I first read his post I thought the problem had started when he put the winter tires on and fixed the brakes at the same time, and that's when the problem started. I only meant for him to check for a missing wheel weight, or perhaps even to check the tire itself for uneven wear. Sometimes its the stupidest little thing that you don't think to check that causes problems.

About how old are the drums? When you did the shoes and hardware, did you by chance get the drums turned?
