generally if a vehicle is built in the last quarter of a year, it is considered the next model year. Built 11/95 would mean it is a 1996 model. The litmus test is the VIN...if the tenth digit is a "T" ,,,it is a 1996 model. Also the title should bear the year model, not the year of manufacture.

I looked at a site called easyship.....it looks the the average cost of a 2 lb package shipped from Florida to Australia was between 30 and 50 dollars US. There is a shop in Miami that specializes in repairing PCMs....https://www.autopcms.com/pages/repair-center

Just throwing out some ideas....

Thank you Bruce,
You obviously saw my photo?
You are correct my VIN is 134FJB859TL156804 ? I think they were upgraded prior to export? My PCM is flat oblong type with the three seperate plugs, black white &grey ?
I think it is pretty safe to assume it is OBD11 it has a color matched OBD11 port below the steering column?
we are putting mine back in later today after opening it up and the three capacitors still have their blue sheaths intact and no sign of burn or smell ?
My friend who is giving me a hand has brought two more ,but I believe '96 are out on their own?
His diagnosis is, there has been a separation, and or, a massive short as even with another unit we get everything except power to the coil?
(30amp fuse in PDC was blown, and our reasoning says it should have fried PCM but no sign of it!) going to check continuity of ground signal wire to ASD methinks it is culprit,
but finding where will be BIG FUN !
Anyway my friend ,thanks for you thoughts and suggestions and I will at least do you the courtesy of an update post!
Regards Mike

Yes, that is correct, prior is OBD1

'97 and later have immobilizer which interacts with PCM, so PCM expects a signal from immobilizer

'96 and earlier has no immobilizer

used '96 PCM are hard to find in OZ, as one of our members was looking for one

UPDATE
Can't trust local wreckers even if same part number?
going to wait for one from from US, getting ridiculously expensive, wasted 100 on one that did less than my original
which is back in now for test purposes while we either find the fault, or the US one arrives?
I never realised Australia was such a desert island when it comes to parts and service LOL

here is '96 PCM parts x ref from the Flagship webpage

56041180, 56041197, 56041199, 56041200, 56041202, 56041248, 56041249, 56041251, 56041252, 56041254, 56041293, 56041294, 56041296, 56041297, 56041299, 56043180, 56043197, 56043199, 56043200, 56043202, 56044248, 56044249, 56044251, 56044252, 56044254

I have 2 of those with different part nums in my 3x '96 XJ

If I could get one of those from a wrecker, or much cheaper, a private seller, I would probably take it

Unfortunately you do not know for sure the PCM is the problem, or other factors exist

I consider these XJ to have very poor quality plastic insulation on the wires, which is prone to cracking, causing shorts

Unfortunately, the replacement cost of a vehicle that will do what the XJ will is probably about 3 times the cost of an equivalant XJ
Thats one reason I bought a spare '96 XJ, cost me only a few hundred $, got it running, I have used parts off it several times

IF The ****** MB had computers and sensors Hitler would have won ! --
going to push it down back yard ,and forget it , seriously mate, some ***** in south Sydney had one same part number as mine, said it was in immaculate condition and worked fine
as it had been refurbished! Further questioning when I asked for his invoice ,it appears his brother rewiired it ,LOL He said he would accept 150 for it as deposit??????
If my prayers were answered the gentleman is now awaiting **** surgery!!!
