Yes they make 40s and 45s,but were not used in xjs, they were in wranglers, fjs, land cruisers,I read where they were an option for xjs. And that they have the same strenght as a 44.

there was never a dana 40 made. that i know for sure. never ever ever. so.. stop talkin ouchya ****.

and a 29spline 8.25 will handle 35s just fine. i watched a dana 44 break on 33"s while a 8.25 with 36"s walked right by it.

both axles are pretty damn strong. they will both break if they get twisted up on something.

I liked this topic,,, gave me a look on alot of peoples opinion.

Since i have the HP30 in the front and chrysler 8.25 (29 spline) I think im just going to re-gear it with 4.88 or even 4.56... I rather the 4.88. This jeep is still my Daily Driver but i still like to take it off roading here and there but i definitly want to run 35's

4.88 or 4.56?????

from the research ive done i think the 8.25 can only be geared to 4.56 at the lowest. so id just do that you dont have to gear down to 4.88s you will be fine.

ok i was wrong i guess there is gearing for it

Yeah Nitro Gear offers 4:88s for a 8.25.

Theyre expense though. Id almost just say go with 4:56s if you do a lot of highway and flatter ground DDing.

What kind of terrian you wheel in?

Well, then you don't need to, but in all honesty the 29 spline 8.25 is a fairly stout axle and can handle up to a 35" tire unlocked without beefing it up at all.

Mostly muddy terrain and some rocks... I ran 33 X 13.5 swampers for a while then got rid of those because i drove on the road to much and bought km2,,, i like them,,,probably gonna buy the same tires but 35's

Glad to see more 8.25 supporters now. I think guys have dropped them way to soon thinking they are like the dana 35. But i have a guy going out this weekend with his newly built 8.25 (lunchbox locker 4.56 gears) and a set of 35"s and 36" tires and he is going to try to break it and see what happens.

Verbatium...
If you find yourself progressing into rockier terrain, throw a 4:1 in the t-case to aid the crawl speed/control.
