Remember, your engine has a displacement of four liters. That's not a small engine. Consider that the 2014 Toyota Sienna AWD minivan is rated at 16 city and 23 highway, that's an improvement of just 2 and 5 mpg, respectively. Even with 15 years of technological advancement, a much more aerodynamic shape, and 12.5% less displacement.

I gave up on better MPG long ago. I only get 13-14mpg in city.
I didn't buy it for the MPG anyway

Damn straight on that idea, very poor unless you have a death wish. Back when they had Drive-In Theaters a fellow I knew was at one with a friend in the winter heater running.......They both died tailpipe was rusted away under the cab of the pickup they were in.

From then on my hot rods had exhaust to the rear bumper instead of just past the rear differentials. I have saw several of these caused by carbon monoxide while in CO. most of them caused by being stuck in a car and then drifted over with snow during a storm trying to keep warm.

You could always get radical and do a ls swap with an overdrive trans
