Default Warming the engine...

So, with Fall rolling in the weather here in VA is kinda cold. Yesterday morning, it was about 45* when I started my XJ to go to college, and I think that the cold oil is making higher pressure because it isnt as viscous as warm and is making my usual burnoff worse. So, and I had planned on doing this anyway, I want to invest in a block warmer. Now, I dont want one of the freeze plug warmers.. I was looking at a magnetic warmer that mounts on the oil pan. Any comment/other ideas? Also, I am fabricating a small shield to mount behind the grille and cut off about 30% off the wind flow to the core of the radiator for really cold winter sitautions. Thanks for the feedback guys. Appreciate it.

Also, are there any other heating devices I can use to warm the coolant in the rad end tanks?

Yep, heat the oil, forget the water, heat rises.

Not really sure, read something about it in the manual, check it it says something about it...seen a cherokee or two with a wall plug hangin out of the grill, guess thats what it is.

Get ready for the chance of more leaks as I believe the stock unit mounts in a freeze plug hole. Gotta drain coolant, remove freeze plug, install heater, refill with coolant and hope for no leaks. With a oil pan pad heater, u just clean the surface and glue it on. Heating the coolant is nowhere near as beneficial as heating the oil.

The dealer installed heaters are mostly freeze plug heaters, which work pretty well. Yes, some people have had problems with them, but all in all not that many. The magnetic oil pan heaters are good but can be dislodged from the oil pan. The best heaters were the heater hose tanks, but newer rigs have vacuum heater switches that shut the heater off when the engine is shut off, so you can not use them now.

i have one in my jeep for a tractor, and its the style that mounts to the oil pan. i got it from the local kubota dealer, and its a tisco brand. it works great and have never had any problems with it. also it was cheaper than the ones from a auto parts store.
