weird grinding sound from back of jeep

Mine only. Makes it when letting off the gas but it could be just the beginning stages of it goin bad

i did check my u joints and they are all tight, im guessing the rear diff or the tcase as mentioned. its a nice day in utah so maybe ill crawl under it tonight

This sounds like what I had. My pinion angle was wrong on the rear end and needed a 3 degree pinion angle spacer. Also form what I am told by a few drive shaft specialists the rear dive shaft for older XJ's/MJ's are crap. So that may also be part of it.

But mines an 98 its not real old and I the sound is comin from the transfer case it sounds kinda like the chain in transfer case or something is loose

You ever figure this out? Mine makes a very similar noise. Im thinking my differential fluid needs changing and probably driveshaft u-joints, but was just curious if you ever figured it out.

I kinda did my u joint at the trnasfer case is a little wore but its just the angle of it I think and the front shaft needed some grease it was kinda dry
