Default Welding Questions

I'm going to be doing some chassie body work roughly around the area where the leaf spring is attatched to, i know i'll have to be precise and i will be. My question is what guage and type of metal would you reccomend? I was thinking some stainless steel, but what about you guys what do you think?

no idea but im pretty sure its not gonna be stainless as its tougher to weld. and i dont think regular steel to stainless is considered "normal" welding also dont forget to disconect youre battery to elminate any chance of computer and other componant damage from voltage spikes

Just a warning. If you haven't don a lot of welding don't start practicing on the area of you leaf springs. Have it done by someone that know how to and that knows metals. I am just saying you don't want to put your life and others on a bad practice weld. There are many great welders out there that can just look at the metal and know what gauge to use. Me not being one of them. I can weld fairly well but when it come to welding something as critical as around your suspension leave it to a pro.

when i re-brace or re-inforce the steel around the uni-body frame or the leaf spring mount i typically use 1/8" sheet metal or 3/16's for extra strength. I usually use 18 gauge sheet metal for the floor boards. A good note for the future... whenever your welding something like the frame. stick with same thickness or thicker metal.

the cherokee's chassis is a little thinner than 1/8".
