well doctor.. how long does she have?
so got my 98 with almost 255k on her.. sounds like the input bearing on the ax15 is whining.. no other problems, syncros are good no grinding popping out of gear just the whining from the front of the transmission.. so.. how long ya think she'll last? anyone else running their trans needing a bearing? I think I am going to wait until something worse happens before I pull the trans..

More likely that it is the throw out bearing that is going out. Not hard to replace. Just pull tranny back far enough to get at it. If the clucth is old, now would be the time to replace it all, Clutch, Pressure plate and throwout bearing.

I don't think its the throw out bearing, doesn't sound / feel like it, I can't remember but a throw out bearing wont make noise with the clutch in or out, gonna have to check that though.. as it could be..

That is an old Myth. A throwout bearing can make noise at any time. Especially if it is starting to seize up. Easiest one to start with, check it first and rule out if it is bad or not.

Not true. Does the sound change when you press or release the clutch? If so that is where I would start looking first, The throwout bearing. On my Chevy P/U it will make a whining noise when I let off of the clutch when it was going bad and stop when pressed.

typically a to bearing will make a rubbing sound more than a whining noise from riding the fingers on the pressure plate. I've never heard of one periodically "seizing". if it locks up that's all she wrote and you'll know it.
a whining sound might be the input shaft bearing in the trans? usually anything failing between the bell and trans will be evident by making different noises when the clutch is engaged / disengaged.
if it is the input shaft bearing I'd be worried. if it tears up the pilot bearing and wallers out the crank u might be in bigger trouble.

I have seen TO bearings seize and whine all the time, still doing their job. Have seen pilot bearings seize and whine, with no damage to crank at all.
One thing with all things mechanical, there are no set rules or set in stone reactions. Anything can happen at any time!

Yep.
And if you are burning out TO bearings, check your clutch technique. I've seen a whole lot of people that shoud know better (including mechanics) keeping their big fat left foot on the clutch pedal when they aren't shifting.
It's not a foot rest!

I do not ride the clutch! I still am leaning towards the input shaft bearing.. its got 255k on it.. if anything happens to the trans or motor that requires cracking them open both are getting replaced / rebuilt! its also possible the thrust bearing is wore out on the crank.. then its back to option A... just wondering if anyone else has been neglecting their noisy 5 speed and for how long lol...

and no I haven't seen damage to a crank unless something in the trans let go. I was referring to the input shaft bearing. if it's bad it'll tear up the pilot bearing then eventually ride around the recess in the back of the crank. if it lasts that long haha

Well, for what it's worth, I put about 60k miles on a mustang with a T5 and a whining input shaft bearing, whined from day 1. It'd probably still be whining today had I not shattered 3rd at the track.
Also, as far as throwout bearings are concerned, just cuz they're squeeking doesnt mean theyre failing, I was constantly adjusting my mustangs clutch for years to keep em quiet. Although, I did have one throwout bearing jam up, the damn thing exploded, broke the clutch fork, causing the fork to fall into the spinning clutch and completely mangled the hell out of the pressure plate. It was a quite a mess lol...
