Well I screwed up massively. I don't know what to do. Help.
1989 XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 105,000 miles.
Well I was putting the oil filter adapter back on and it was kind of aggravating. Then I finally got the bolt to start and it went easy. I was happy for a second. Start screwing and all was fine then it got tight. I thought it was the bolt O-ring starting to tighten. Turned it a couple more times and that little metal piece that comes off the motor broke (pictures below). I'm guessing this sends or retrieves oil but not 100% sure. So what can I do about it. Do I have to pull the engine and change blocks over this metal piece. It is rolled amd doesn't meet, so it's not exaclty a tube.
I'm not going to lie I am near panic attack mode. I can't believe this happened.
The plastic piece is near the flash.
The plastic piece sticking out is split in half.

Its just a roll pin that aligns the oil adapter. Honestly, you can probably leave the broken off piece in there and run it like that. It still might have enough sticking out to get it close enough to lined up. If its not sticking out far enough to go in the hole in the adapter, well then you have to get the rest out and a new roll pin. Not the end of the world.

Remove the o-ring that seats on the block and see if the adapter sits tight against the block without it. If it does, you can install the adapter without the roll pin. just watch for the adapter changing alignment after a while and leaking.

Wait, so I may have over reacted and thought I was doomed. That's the first time I've ever done that. Not really, I do it all the time. I've since did some research and read on a couple threads by different members, Cruiser54 included, that you don't even have to have the roll pin. It is just there to help line it up....as y'all also pointed out.
I think I know what happened thinking on it. I was having trouble finding these O-Rings. But I got 3 from a hydraulic shop today. And I think the smallest one that goes on the bolt was the right "circle" size but too thick. Because I couldn't get the bolt to push all the way through the adapter. I thought as I tightened the bolt it would work it's way down. So I think the adapter wasn't sitting right and the O-Ring was preventing it the bolt from snugging down so it got tighter until snap. At least it didn't cross threaded. When I took the bolt back out the small O-Ring was chewed all up.
I just ordered the 33002970K Crown O-Ring set off of Ebay. It will be a week before it comes but at least I can rule out that those O-Rings were the cause in anyway.
At this point the wait doesn't bother me if I can just put this back together without any leaks and everything works right. I might just not worry about messing with that roll pin if it doesn't matter too much. I would hate for anything else to go wrong and/or take up even more time.
Thank you to this forum once again....I love this place.

With the right o-rings, you should be able to press the bolt into the adapter with your thumbs. Then take it out and screw it in while holding the adapter against the block to keep it aligned.
You may be able to snap a good pair of Visegrips on the remains of that roll pin and lever it out slowly. As stated, it's a 1/4 X 1.5" steel roll pin.

Alternatively you can yank the rest of the roll pin out, unbolt the threaded filter bolt from the adapter and screw it into the block then you can just use short filters without the adapter.

Did you read the whole thread and see how many folks had the filter get punctured?
Not a good recommendation.
