well i wouldnt go and replace the pump just yet....if it stumbles around a bit for a few seconds and then high idles fine then it is most likely a faulty fuel injector/s. which means it could either just be gummed up which is causing it to stay somewhat open and slowly leak in fuel or could be just going south and needs to be replaced. You should test each injector before you spend the money on a pump that might not fix your problem. And really it could be both.

But if you end up having to replace injectors might as well buy em off of here from one of the guys. Do a search on injector swap he sells em for like 60-70 bones i think fully cleaned, tested and rebuilt. I know alot of guys have purchased from him with success. Save you ALOT of money on 6 aftermarket injectors. jmtc

FYI: I had this issue with my 87 replaced pump runs awesome now only to find that my injectors were also causing the long cold start issue. i am going to try some seafoam in the tank before i replace them tho. cheapest way to clean em out and if still have problem only out $10 instead of cost of time and money that could be wasted on a failed part.

Thanks a million! I'll test them out first and if it comes down to the injectors I'll get ahold of that guy. Maybe some injector cleaner will work from my local auto part store, guess we will see!

Most injector cleaners are intended to be used as a maintenance item, not a cure. The best injector cleaner I've ever used is BG 44K, usually only available at automotive repair shops, about $20 per can and worth every dime.

Default Turning over slow.

My '93 was getting slower and slower to start. Lots of juice - 14+ volts across the battery when idling, and almost as much from positive terminal to any ground. New battery earlier in winter, and other electrical systems seemed A-OK. Let it sit for days and all the lights are still bright. Just turning over ponderously slow, and starting to worry me that old faithful was going to leave me high and dry somewhere.

I had a starter from a donor jeep that looked to be OK. The change is really easy. 1/2" wrench for the battery terminal, 8mm and 14mm lugs on the connections and a 14mm and a 15mm bolt to the block. A universal and extensions and ratcheting box end wrench made it all uneventful. A bit cramped under there, and glasses required to keep the grit out of the eyes.

Out and back in, in about 20 minutes. Moment of truth... Presto! Cranks over like a champ.

Was the old starter coated in oil from leaking oil filter adapter seals?

Yes, the gas tank has to come down to get to the fuel pump. I had to change the fuel pump on my 98 two years ago because of the same problem. Now my 94 needs a new one too; I'd rather get a new pump than have to prime the lines a few times before starting it.

Oily, messy starter from leaky oil filter adapater seals? Not too bad. I had replaced the seals a couple of years ago, so oil leaks were all dried up. Of course the filter change is still messy, but wiping up makes a big difference. I think the old starter was just tired. Probably the original, so 22 years old and 410,000 km later...

hey cruiser do you know of a way to clean oil out/off a starter without hurting it ? I rebuilt mine a couple months ago and my rms blew and covered everything . My starters out right now and seems like a good time to clean it.

It's soooooo easy.

Take it apart and clean the gunk out of it and off the armature with brake cleaner.

Default 1997 grand Cherokee

i have a 97 grand Cherokee that I bought about a year ago and went to replace my fuel filter and to my surprise, their was no filter. I know that the guy I bought it from swapped engines and did some modifications to the Jeep but why straight line the fuel line. That being said letting all the contaminants into the fuel rail, will that contribute to slow starting and performance issues? I have since replaced the injectors with 4 hole injectors, new cap rotor new spark plugs and wires new exhaust system new engine all together as the engine was not in good shape. Currently waiting on parts to fix the fuel filter/line issue. That being said just want to find out if the filter not being there whatsoever will cause bad mileage, slow starting, and low performance.
