Default What cylinder head?

hi everyone, i have a 2001 cherokee and the 0331 head.
i've been playing around with the engine compartment of my xj and decided that since it's all disarmed it was time to replace the cylinder head.

PB/ATK Northamerica

I put an Atkinson cylinder head on a 74 datsun 260z I had and it was an extremely good head I would use them again for sure. I have also read that Alabama cylinder headsbare a great head and very worth the money aswell so I would use either of those 2 plus the Alabama head is reinforced in the 0331 weak spot from what I have seen around the net

Although there certainly are others, I usually recommend Clearwater Cylinder Head or Alabama Cylinder Head. Somebody did say though in a recent thread, that Clearwater has been out of these, but that inventory issue may now be resolved.

I got a cylinder head from J&C Enterprises in West Virginia. It was for my 90 XJ.Paid $289 shipped to my house with a 1 year warranty. They even sent along a prepaid shipping label so I could return the core. Very happy with these folks,I highly recommend them.

i just looked at the J&C cylinder heads, and i liked them, the one i need (cast#0331) comes in 2 options.
new for $419 + core
rebuilt for $319 + core
i'm goingo to do some research about this cylinder heads, they are offering 90 days warranty and the same prepaid ups shipping for the core.
do you know if the 0331 that offer is reinforced between the 3 and 4 cylinders? i emailed them asking.

awesome a 2+2.!
it sucks that it was totaled, and while it was parked at your house. i'm restoring a 65 and a 78 mustang, and i'm probably buying a comanche this weekend to get it restored....
definitely try to get some pics, my dad had one when i was a kid and i loved that car.

Any feedback from J&C? Im wondering the same thing... Is this a custom casting? Are they casting their own. How can they still call it 0331.

Where is the casting number that says it's a 0331 or something else?

Mine doesn't have a number on it even close.

Here's what it does have:
2686
F19
89
NH2

I took it off my '95 4.0 Cherokee - cracked like the top of a Sourdough loaf of bread.

Isn't it interesting how everyone SAYS they have the 0331 head, but nobody knows how to identify it.

After talking to several 4.0 head sources:

There are 4 DIFFERENT heads for the 4.0 - and they ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE without some modification to the manifolds.

And - there are even more configurations of head gaskets.

I've never even looked at my 90, but I did see this;

# @ Drivers side top edge
The heads that had trouble were the early #0331 heads (1999-2001WJ/TJ, 2000-2001XJ) before they were revised in late 2001 (revised heads have the "TUPY" foundry mark.)
1998 will have the #0630 head, which is typically subject to uncommon individual defects rather than a class-affecting problem.

Also I wanted to add, remember they need to OK your core. Might be with any fault your deposit is gone.

And thanks all! Handy info.
