I always verify using an infrared point and shoot thermometer pointed directly at the thermostat housing. That gets you close to the actual coolant temperature.

I just purchased a full service manual and have been doing some light reading ......
On the newer XJ's from the service manual ......( my manual is for a 2001 but I imagine this applies to all ODBII models)

DTC code 1281 .... engine cold too long .... will set if the engine does not reach 176F in 15 minutes......

You might get away with a 180 but I would say that would be cutting it very close and on any cold day you would likely get a CEL.

If you want to run a colder thermostat your going to need a "fooler resister" in-line with the coolant temp sensor or an out of spec sensor from a different source. If you do this the engine could run cooler but the factory gauge would still read 210.
Why you would want to go to all this trouble for 15 degrees is beyond me.

195 for me ...... even in Forida

Some items/diagnostics/service procedures etc., in the FSM change from one model year to the next. '98 FSM shows 160F as the P1281 threshold, too cold too long. FWIW, Chrysler/Jeep lists a "Severe Duty" t-stat.......it's a 180F.

Good Stuff!!
Question: Since the 98 FSM and the 2001 FSM show different code thresholds, is the Severe Duty t-stat avalable for the just the 98 (and other years with the 160 threshold) or is it also avalable for the 2001?

Don't think the 180F stat is model year specific but not 100% positive.....if it fits in the hole, it should work. The info on it was posted over at JeepForum.com a while back. We just ran a 180F Stant SuperStat in our XJ.....heater works great and 10 months out of the year it just runs a little cooler (180-195). Those other 2 mos, 3 digit ambient, running a/c, stopped in traffic on black asphalt, it'll be well north of 210 even with a 180 stat.

I'm wondering on an '01 if a 180F stat could possibly trigger a CEL since the threshold is 176F? Here, when it's really cold (below freezing) and we're running the heater at higher temps/speed, there's actually enough heat being pulled off the heater core that the ScanGauge will indicate around 175F for quite a while of driving.

Based on that info, I am gonna try a 180 Stant Superstat. I live in FL so, heat running 100% and true cold is not gonna happen.
I tow a boat. All OK with just the Jeep but when towing the temp goes high enough that the electic fan never shuts off and it just doesnt seem to run as good once it gets that hot.

Of course, I just also ordered a CSF 3 core, High volume Water pump, new electric fan (bearings are shot) and a fan clutch and full hose set (just because)
I am also going with a seperate trans cooler.
(I tend to go overkill on stuff as I dont like to do it twice)

FWIW, especially if u have all components removed at the same time, I'd suggest sticking a garden hose in the the t-stat hole and flush crud out the water pump hole, then (with both heater hoses disconnected from the motor) stick the garden hose into one heater hose at a time and flush the core both ways. Obviously, the motor and heater core are flushed before that new rad goes in.
