You will need wheels with about 4 1/2" to 4" of backspacing. If you plan to have any acceleration you will need 4.10, better would be 4.56 gears. 3" will work with lots of trimming, 4.5" or higher would be better. Anything above 3.5" will require a SYE and DS. that the short list theres alot more you should do.

If you Just don't want to be laughed at get a locker or 2 and forget the big tires. big tire Won't get you up a slippery hill a locker will.

You will get a little less MPG, but with some trimming & the 3"s you have you'll be fine! Just remember easy on the skinny pedal, at least tell you can upgrade your shafts!!!

This (bold) statement is not true. I run 6.5" in the rear of mine and i am on the stock DS, stock Xcase position(no drop), and no shims-i have 0 vibes and no issues. There are guys running 8" on here with my same set up and no issues.

Every XJ is different.

As posted 3" with trimming will be fine. HOWEVER what most people forget to do is Bumpstop!!!

You do need 4" back spacing on your wheels tho. that is a sure thing!

and on the new leaf springs what lift are they? great deal on them!

if you have a rear to spare and dont want to put money towards a locker, just have someone weld the spider gears for you. my buddy did that and had no problems. 3" lift and 31s is really all you need

As for tire size and gearing.

You will notice the lack of overdrive in your pocket. But it is perfectly capable with stock gearing. I had an ex that wheeled hers (4.5" RC lift on 33's and a D35) but she popped her flares off ....She also had stock gearing with no isses.

I run 33's on stock gear and i love the skinny pedal! (i keep punching it down and it keeps coming up to fight again!!!! one day i will win...) As long as you dont get hung up on an undercut rock you will be fine. However unless your rock crawling i doubt that will happen!!

The fact that you are not having a problem doesn't make it right. You just might be more tolerant to some issues than others may be.

If I am going to give someone advise, I try to give advise that will be the Right way to do it. Not always the advise that they MIGHT be able to get by with. I have fought the gearing / SYE issue for 20 years. I have come to the conclusion that the pro SYE crowd knows what they are saying. This is why my XJ has only 3.5" lift and 31" tires, with 33" tires and 3" more lift in the shed. I did have issues and realized it was the lack of proper gearing, steering, driveline, and suspension mods. So I lowered my Jeep to where the parts I have weren't pushing the limits of the XJ. When I can afford to do it right I might go higher... It has taken a while but I have learned that you should Do It the Right Way or wait till you can.

oh i definitely recommend a SYE kit that was my best investment. as far as gearing goes, i guess every cherokee is different. i can still light the tires up with 212000 miles. i have no complaints as far as my stock gearing goes other than mpg.
