Well, I finally got around to taking my head off to replace the blown head gasket and I found this on the no.2 cylinder. This was about the best picture I could get of it. The left edge of the piston is gone and I can see the rings. When I ran my fingers down the cylinder wall I didn't feel any scarring or pitting. I'm not the greatest mechanic in the world but I can do what I got to do. My question to you guys is would you replace the piston or just look for another motor? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If that is all you found and there appears to be no cylinder ridge then I would just change that piston. Unbolt the piston from the crank and tap it up to the top and slowly out of the cylinder. Replace with a new piston on your original rod, with a new set of rings. hone the cylinder a tad to give the new rings a good surface to seat on. Button it all back together using the proper torque settings and you are good to go.

Check the head carefully for damage from the missing piston parts. Have a valve job while it is off the engine and put it all back together. You should get many years of good service from that engine.

I agree with Blue. If the cylinder can be cleaned up with a hone, replace the piston and put it back togther.

Ok Blue & Buck, I'm going to replace the piston. The head is going to the machine shop tomorrow. I have another noob question though. How hard is it to get the oil pan off?
Kermit, I'm in southeast Va.

Ok, somebody threw a monkey wrench into my plans. I can get a killer deal on a wrecked 94 Grand Cherokee. I know it's the same motor. Is there anything in the way of it going right into my 95 Cherokee? The Grand was a great running truck before the accident. I believe it has less miles than my Cherokee also.

If it's the same motor then you should be able to strip the GC motor down to the bare block and head. All of your original equipment should bolt right up.

Thanks Buck, I think I will go ahead and pick it up. I just hope my neighbor will let it set in my driveway a couple of days before he has to call "The Man" on me.

Some municipalities have regulations.
Some people have A-holes for neighbors.
