X2

I'd check the oil for chocolate milk. Sure sign the head gasket is leaking.

You can invest thousands into this and still have a ratty old XJ with 200k+ miles.
You're better off buying something with 125k miles for $2500-$3000.
125k vs 200k whats the difference? Either one is just as likely to have mechanical problems as well as looking ratty.

I am actually looking at it for a friend who is at work. He can afford more but would like to keep it well under 2K.

Probably a reflection on the condition of rest of the Jeep, caveat emptor. Budget for a new motor just to be safe.

He mis-spoke because his new car has 13x,xxx miles. Heres a pic:
I'm always extremely leery when they have the engine hot upon showing. Maybe it pops codes on cold starts??

Yep. Still, if the unibody is in good shape an engine, transmission, and tc can be found for under a grand.

Used cars don't work that way.

Run, don't walk, from this XJ.
This particular XJ is a neglected POS whose owner didn't invest a penny into.
Didn't bother to fix a turn signal or window?

Either pay up front for a decent car, or constantly pay to repair a neglected POS that was dirt cheap.
You'll be at $3000-4000 one way or another.

About 75k miles.

So, if I gave you a choice of 2 used transmissions (or hub bearings, or shocks, or window regulators), one with 125k and the other with 200k, you'd flip a coin since they're identical? LOL.

God damn it Bimmer. You have a lot to learn before you should be giving anyone advice.

This.

Like stated, motors for these are a dime a dozen. Biggest thing is rust. If its running decent, no rust and a good price... Jump on it. Lots of fun working on these if you have a smidgen of common sense, and a lot of people here with know-how if you get stuck.

We have been saying this for years now.... Anyway on another note as stated rust free is key.... But what does your friend from work want to do mileage means squat if it has not been maintained

I'll bet the seller has never owned a 4.0 before and thinks the cold-start lifter noise/piston slap means the engine is about to blow. Fortunately it quiets down once it's warm...now to dump the thing for $1K and run.
You get some good deals off these guys who don't know that noise is pretty normal.
Ask him if it sounds like a diesel when it's cold and wait for the hemming and hawing.

Did you check the oil pressure by chance?
