96 cherokee 4.0 4WD. Anything I can do about it? It doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the belts or pulleys, but rather from the block itself.

It helps the people here to know what year, model, engine, transmission and if it is 2wd or 4wd. Adding information about and modifications, or previous major repairs and mileage also helps the people who you are hoping to get some help from....just an FYI...

Engine was off....LOL.

Photo was taken to emphasize that if a 7 year old girl could use the stethoscope, then so could an adult.

Harbor Freight for under $10.

can't open the file
But trying to diagnose soundbites from engine sounds is almost as unsuccessful usually as trying to diagnose a smell over the Internet

Exactly!! LOL Generally a total waste of time.
" I have a smell in my engine bay"
" What's it smell like?"
" Vegemite".
"Likely a dead rodent along with it's droppings somewhere near the exhaust manifold."

defintely a job for an engine stethoscope, although a metal pipe or screwdriver works quite well

I thought I heard 2 unusual sounds, one like lifters, the other higher pitched
