As far as Cherokee OEM

it would be the Dana 44 but they are hard to find stock.

Thank you for this link!

I was trying to figure out what transfer case my 98 Cherokee Sport has and it looks like a 231.

Now I just need to figure out what is causing the binding / jerking on slow speed (while turning, seems to be worse on a heavy incline while turning at the same time).

wow YELLOWSTONEPART way to pimp your product while not posting a single thing relevant to this thread.

I know on the D35 there is a label on the diff housing not the diff cover ..this is not stamped in or a tag it is raised and on one of the gusset pieces (if you can call them that) when looking at it.

I have the up country package and HAD a rear sway bar. I think it would come with it regardless, remember these vehicles were after the roll over fiasco of the early CJ's where they took a CJ5 and cut it hard to the left then right at 40mph to simulate a vehicle going around a "normal" corner.
if it were bought used the PO could have taken it off. it isn't like the thing is permanently attached.

the LSD in the 35 is called trac loc. it is a clutch pack that is just about worthless. if you have the trac loc (lsd) it requires friction modifier, just adding gear oil for LSD diffs is not enough. the carrier for the spider gears is straight sided for the LSD an open diff steps up and gets wider on the ring gear side of the carrier.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the afor pictured differential. Let me clear the air:

You my friend have a dana 8 million under the back of your jeep. It is very rare and will be the central subject for the next indiana jones movie. And also if you were to own the limited slip version of said differential it will require 2 ounces of unicorn blood in addition to the standard 70 90 in order to properly function. Hope this helps...

good luck to the OP finding unicorn blood. It was so hard for me to find I swapped out my lsd carrier for an open one.

Elf tears work just as well...

BTW. Its a dana 35. Since you are changing fluid anyway, look for the lsd clutch packs when you have the cover off. If you haven't figured it out amoungst all the abstract posting
