I really want a locker.
I am usually on the road.
Could I get a limited slip or manual locker for less than about $300?

look for the lockright locker.
www.aussielocker.com
another very similar locker.
both can be had for under 300. i run the lockright up front and it is undetectable in 2wd. perfect for heavy street rigs. i ran the lockright front and rear on the tj. no complaints and no issues. they take some adjustment to get used to how they react but after a day or two you will not even care about it anymore (rear). the front locker sleeps till you put it in 4wd.

Ok. Can someone please clarify something for me please? My understanding on diffs is this... Open means both wheels get equal power all the time, but when one spins out they both spin out? LSD only powers one wheel until it slips and then the other wheel is engaged? Lockers do what? Pretty much the same as LSD? Sorry if I sound retarded, I am just learning this stuff.

Lockers allow you to control whether you have a limited slip differential or an open differential acting at any given time, allowing for traction off road and saving you from wear & tear on-road.

So that's what the difference between air lockers and mechanical? One is engage via air pressure and the other is like a cable or something?

From my understanding of it, air lockers remotely activate the diff lock, and a mechanical locker involves climbing underneath your vehicle and doing the locking yourself.

That's kinda lame IMO. Who would want to have to crawl under their rig every time they need to engage or disengage. That's like having auto-locking front hubs that don't work so you gotta jump out turn the deal manually.

Well there's tradeoffs for having vacuum driven:
Pros:
Don't have to get out of vehicle.
Easy to engage
Cons:
More possibility for system failures
$$$
Some people may also like the satisfaction of knowing they moved the locker into place themselves via a switch
