what kind of multimeter do i need?

I have a Simpson 270, it's a great little meter. Mine is an older one that was given to me about 25 years ago. These are not high-impedance meters though, they are rated at 20K ohms per volt. Good for a non-electronic meter but still imposes too much of a load for working with sensitive circuitry.
Back in the day we used VTVMs (Vacuum Tube Volt Meter) for high-impedance voltage measurement. These days I have a Sears/Craftsman digital model with manually-selected ranges for that.
Then there are those Harbor Freight meters you can get free with a coupon. I have a stack of those things. They do actually seem to work but I wouldn't want to rely on one for anything critical.

If you want a good multimeter buy a Fieldpiece they are very reliable and can be used with many different attachments. They come with an amp clamp and temperature sensor.
