Ive got a rattling coming from somewhere. I cant figure out where its coming from. It mostly does it when i put it in drive and sitting still with the brakes on. Ive look all over underneath and cant seem to find it. In the video it was doing it really loud, its not always that loud. Anyone have a similar sound? please help! thanks in advance

Loose torque converter bolts. Pull the inspection cover off of the bellhousing and tighten them.

agreed either the torque converter is lose or the exhaust is rubbing against the cross member. those are my two guesses at that. easiest way to test the exhaust one is just start it up, apply parking break and get under it and push up on it to see if that solves the problem, otherwise highly think its the TC

i would have never thought it would be the converter bolts. this must be a pretty common thing? i will check them tomorrow and see if thats it. thanks alot guys!

Yes, it is common. However it is usually the inner bolts that hold the drive plate to the crank causing the driveplate to crack. This can only be checked with the transmission out. Good luck!

I have an annoying rattle in my '98 similar to yours. Yours sounds like more of a knock where mine sounds like it's coming from the dash, although there is nothing in the engine bay making any noise. It happens at the same time too--in drive and sitting at lights. Sometimes park but not as often. Keep us posted on what you find!

mine has a much worse rattle, more metallic clattering, worse when cold, seems actually worse in park not drive. Def coming from bellhousing. Same thing? Uhg I need to get in they're lol, wasn't planning on separating engine from trans til one of them blows up though...

What will this cause if left unfixed? Ah besides flexplate cracking which is pretty bad...

I pulled the inspection cover and took the bolts out, put some red loctite on them and reinstalled. Noise is still there one thing i noticed tonight is that it gets louder with someone in the passenger seat. I just came inside to get something to eat and then im going to rip the dash and center council apart and try to find something in there. hopefully i will find something there so i dont have to rip the tranny out. What do you guys think? think its the inner bolts now?

Okay, more diag is needed for your jeep. Does the sound change when driving? Does it change when you rev the engine? Where is the noise the loudest? More details will help all of us help you. The noise is a knocking sound that could be an exhaust hanger bracket that broke loose and is knocking against the floor board. I have pulled the dash a part in an XJ and there isn't anything in there that would cause that noise. Newer cars and trucks have EATC's that use electric actuators for the temp bend doors and modes. But our jeeps don't have that, they use vacuum to pull the door open or shut.

it doesnt do it when driving no. doesnt change when i rev it up. it sound like something in the lower dash or front of center console by the shifter. the exhaust is solid no broken hangers or anything. i looked 100 times haha.

GOOD NEWS- i pulled apart the dash and found a wire with something on the end, my dad said looks like a remote start sensor and we pulled that out because its not needed and now the noise is gone! that wire and sensor went up by the radio and must have been rubbing against the dash. ill try to figure out how to post a picture of the sensor thing and get another video up. i have yet to take it for a ride and let it warm up and stuff to see if it will do it then but im 95% sure that it was that sensor thing. ill update this tomorrow after i drive it and let you guys know. thank you for taking the time to help, i appreciate it

false alarm, noise is still there. must have just been a coincidence that when we pulled that wire it stoped doing it. any more thoughts?
