What repair parts / tools do you carry?
This question has almost certainly been asked before, but I'm clueless how to write search criteria for it.
What do you carry to turn "broke down on the berm" to "back up and running"?
I'm more interested in small parts and sensors to repair highway failures, rather than heavy-metal for hard-core wheeling, but both might be useful to hear.
My new-to-me 96 XJ, and my first Jeep, died on the highway on a test run; shut off like a switch was flipped. Had no diagnostics (and vehicle doesn't have a tach, so could not see "cranking but no tach registering"). Shop says cam position sensor, which makes sense. Is this a common-enough failure point to warrant carring a spare? Anything else I should put in the road tool and parts kit?

I have a '96, and carry a number of items that were collected over the years by owners of '96 models that were hard-core wheelers, it was a great deal, and they are under my front PS seat
* full set of vital sensors (factory used), a '96 PCM (has to be from a '96)
other things that are good to have, and I do, but dont normally carry them in my vehicle
* fuel pump assembly (unique to '96, although the pump itself isnt),
distributor, alternator, starter motor
I have a $50 toolset in a case that has many things in it,
and a set of spanners, pliers hammer etc stored under rear seat with jack

I have never really carried spare parts but if going for a trip over 2 hours will carry tools.
I have a 1/4 ratchet set up to 15mm. Carry a 3/8 with 13 to 21mm sockets and a 1/2 ratchet with 15 up to 24mm sockets.
I also add some ratcheting open end/box end wrenches, a couple of screw drivers, pry bar, hammer and slip joint pliers.
Usually add a small multimeter as well.
In the XJ all the time is a bag with a small air compressor, jumper cables and a small LiOn jump box and first aid kit.
Need to add a fire extinguisher. The tools are the basic set I carry to the local Upull it junk yard but I don't include the 1/2 impact or the sawsall....

I would recommend a spare serpentine belt and the wrenches/sockets to install it. also a spare alternator. enough fluids to get you to a repair shop.

Saw a guy modded his rear behind the spare wheel, by cutting the plastic and boxing it in, to neatly store fluids and stuff...I have thought to do this mod

I did carry U-joints on one trip of about 900 miles. Don't remember if I suspected they were going out or not, now. I did have to change one on the rear driveshaft using a ball peen hammer and a rock in the mountains. I remember it was cold!
On another trip to the mountains, I lost the alternator. On a trip to town, I picked up a new one for the XJ and changed it under a small tent at the hunting camp, it snowed on me then, too! This was the first of two alternator changes on that trip!
As long as I have the tools, parts are pretty easy to come by in my AO. As I usually have friends or family close by, I can bum a ride to the auto parts store w/o a problem.

A trailer with a spare running Jeep.
Actually, I carry a tool set from Harbor Freight that was on sale for $29....https://www.harborfreight.com/tool-k...-pc-63248.html
I also make sure that the Jeep is maintained and inspected often. Cruiser calls it "noggin poking" and it has warned me of upcoming issues many times.

I would say go to a Pick&Pull and strip several 4.0s of their sensors, clean and bench-test them as best you can. Put them in a heavy-duty freezer bag and put them under the rear seat. This is in addition to the basic tool set you need to carry. A test light, Leatherman tool, and a good length of 16 ga wire is also handy. Oh, and some spare fuses.

I just have a small ratchet and socket set, a spare serpentine belt, some oil and some coolant. I'm never anywhere where I couldn't be recovered and as much as I'd rather repair and drive away than be recovered, if I'm not anywhere near home, I'm not in clothes that I'd be happy getting oily and dirty.

Depends what and where. I do have a hi-vis hoodie in the back. I have once removed my rear bench seat base to investigate a steaming carpet and used it to not get wet on the floor. Turned out the exhaust had twisted and the silencer was touching the floor.

I always carry a tow strap, hatchet, hammer, jumper cables, multiple air compressors, a shovel, duct tape, electrical tape, couple knives, binoculars, a road flare, lighter and matches, fire tinder, flashlight, first aid kit, jack, star wrench, screwdrivers, ratchet/miscellaneous sockets, and that’s just about it. I don’t carry fluids unless I’m leaking something.
