What would/should you pay in today's Inflated Market?

I still see the occasional add on craigslist from the rural areas where XJs are sold cheap because the owner is not in tune with the popularity/demand for the vehicle. Typically they are 98/99/00 and in the $2500-3500 price range with super high miles. Sometimes rusted out. Sometimes not. I see one of these every 4-5 months, and they of course don't last long. The rusted out crap boxes that will not or barely pass inspection here are sold for about $1k or a little more, usually as parts only vehicles. Good condition XJs (a little rust, few rips in the interior) with moderately high miles (120-180k), where the owner understands the Jeep culture and what they have...sell for between $5-9k depending on mods, etc.

Thank you to you all for your input. For the time being I have decided to stick with my tried and tested '92. I love this thing. It has not let me down yet. I am going to adjust my plans and create a mild off-roader with the intention on DD it. But as always, plans change. This is my first XJ, and i bought it with the intention of learning how to take it a part and put it back together again. So who knows! Just couldn't see myself parting with $6k when i already have a great basis to start with.
Thanks Again
