Piston slap (mostly #5 or#6 cylinder) can turn in to the piston failing and the connecting rod going thru the side of the cylinder block. To me, this is the engine "blowing up". No regular maintenance can prevent it.

If you are experiencing piston slap and let it go get ready to say "Good night Gracie".

funny you mention this. mine sees at least two 5k rpm shifts a day. i've put 90k miles on this thing always flooring the **** out of it. odo reads 296k now. i'm certainly not condoning that everyone do what i do. but it's almost comical how afraid you guys are. esp an inline motor. 5k is nothing. educate yourself on how these things work, maybe you'll have a little more fun with them.

I have 291,000 miles on mine. And beat mine everyday. I change the oil every 10,000 miles using Rotella T6 5W-40 and Purolator Boss oil filter PBL30001. I will see 4k rpms sometimes. It still has 40+ psi oil pressure on the highway and 20-30 psi idle.

The ol' redline tune does motors good. I think mine runs better now from climbing the mountains so much than when I first got it. Blow the crap out!!
