Default Where to best mount 6x9 speakers??

I got the Sony Xplode stereo system for Christmas from my son. It came with a deck, 2 x 6 1/2 speakers and 2 x 6x9 speakers. I'm planning on putting the 6 1/2s in the doors. However......I'm taking suggestions on where best to mount 6x9 speakers in an XJ. HELP!! Who has dealt with this issue and found a place where they fit and sound good?

I was thinking of trying to make them fit in the hatch if it doesn't require too much hacking.

You could mount them to the rear hatch panel or you could make or buy 6x9 boxes for them. I you really want to get creative you could make some mounts for the upper head liner area..

i got that exact same setup for christmas too! the deck is awesome, but i have yet to instal the speakers. my XJ already has 6x9s in the rear hatch. after puttng the deck in, i felt no need to change the speakers out. with the three way speakers in the hatch, there is no sound distortion or muffling through something else. the sound goes straight to the passengers. if you want pics i can take some and post them, just let me know.

I put 6x9s in the hatch of my '84 and let me tell ya it was a PAIN. You get to cut/dremel/hack/beat fiberglass. And when you are all done, the speakers NEVER stay in the door. Everytime you close the hatch they come loose and flop out. Can't tell you how many times I had em fall from the hatch when it was open. I am NEVER doign 6x9s in the hatch again.

I actually found a soundbar from a '95 Laredo for my '92 and I stuck 6.5s in there and in the front doors. Sounds AWESOME.

My advice is 6.5s for the front doors and 5.25s for the hatch. Unless you want to make boxes for your 6x9s for the back.

^^^thanks for posting that, sounds like I should strongly consider beefing up the mounting area if I want them to stay put.

How did you manage to put 6.5"s in the door? Did you have a adapter plate? Pics would def be nice.

I put my Infinity 6022i 6.5" speakers in my '92 doors no problem. I have JVC 6.5s in my '99 also. The 6.5s in the '92 took some adjusting of the metal with a hammer. The '99 just fit perfectly. You can get 6.5s in the older XJs with a bit of metal adjusting with a hammer. You just need to bend in the edges about 1/2 inch all around or so. It's no biggie. I removed my plastic little grilles on the door panels and put my Infinitys on the outside of the door panel with the gaskets and plastic trim rings (Hooray for 2 inch self-tapping sheetmetal screws!). If I need to remove the door panels I need to remove the speakers first. No biggie. My '99 has the speakers behind the panels as there was enough room for them on the inside of the panel.

Make sense? I put 6x9s in my 84 doors too. Behind the panels too.

My Sony Xplode 6.5s fit in the original holes made for the 5.5s perfectly, in the doors of my 91. Just had to drill new holes for the 6.5s as they're a little wider. I wasn't able to use the fancy Xplode speaker covers because I didn't want to cut up my door panels. The speakers fit perfect behind the door panels just like the old 5.5s did. I wired up the deck and the new front speakers sound Waaaay better than the old ones. I'm still thinking over where to mount the 6x9s.

I think it would be sick if you could find a way to mount em somehow onto the headliner!

just some tin snips and you're good to go. I keep too much junk in my hatch to put speakers back there.

I did a little creative grinder work back in the hatch and the 6x9s fit perfectly and they sound great. Again, I mounted them behind the inside hatch panel so I didn't use the fancy Sony Xplode speaker covers. It looks good and clean and it sounds AWESOME!!!!
