The Temperature gauge on my 95 XJ hasn't functioned since I bought the car and I followed the wire on it too here but it's not connected. Can anyone tell me where this might go? (1995 Cherokee XJ SE 4.0 L This is Above the intake manifold

Looks like the water temperature sensor,, is that the one that goes in the rear of the head for that year ?? Seeing where it's at now I'm wondering of you can't buy a thermostat housing and mount it there...
There are two coolant sensors. One at the back of the head for a gauge or light and one on the thermostat housing to provide a coolant temp reading for the PCM. The one in the pic looks to be the one for the thermostat housing.

Seams like it’s meant to be close the where it is because it is tied along a paths to this location.
early xjs like my 1990 did not have a temp sensor on the thermostat house, later ones like 2001 I think had a sensor on the thermostat house. could you have an early thermostat house on a late xj that should have the fitting on the thermostat house? If so, that will explain why there is no place for that sensor to mount.
Actually the one for the PCM is next to the housing. My mistake.
The one for the gauge/light is a sending unit where as the one for the PCM is a coolant temperature sensor.
Thing is the one for the PCM should be a two pin connector.
The one in the motor is for the PCM. There should be a place for the temp gauge/light sending unit at the back of the head next to the valve cover on the drivers side.
Is it possible the previous owner swapped in a newer engine that didn't have the hole in the block for the temp sensor? The newer years only have the sensor in the thermostat housing and the dash is driven by the engine computer, which reads the one in the housing.
Why does that wire on that sender look more like a capillary tube for a mechanical temperature gage than a wire for electric temperature gage ?
I agree, I think it is a aftermarket sensor. The challenge will be to find the other end or the sensor under the dash and see if it is connected to anything. A continuity tester will help to identify it.
