Default Whining noise from the rear???

I was driving alot today and it was 102 degrees. I have a 1990 Cherokee with the d30 and 31x10.5/r15 and whle i was driving up a tiny paved hill my rear started whining. But then while i was stopped at a red light it would still whine and when I put it in park in a parking lot it stops. would yall know what that is? It stays the same whine no matter how fast I go. Thanks Zach

check your transmission fluid with it in neutral, engine running.

transmission and tcase are seperate, they dont share fluid.
If the TCase is leaking I would definately be checking the level. It only holds like 2 qts.

Long shot, but it might be the fuel pump. Mines on the way out and it has a whiney hum to it thats pretty loud when i'm driving. It gets quieter when i'm at idle. Just a thought.

guy at the autoparts store I know pretty well who has had like 3 jeeps said it sounds like bad u joints which would also cause the bushings on the t-case to go bad as well. any thoughts on that?

I was speaking to a mechanic that is a jeep fanatic. He said almost immediately that it was a fuel pump issue. Said it might be overheating, and it needed replacing. That made all sorts of sense seeing as I drive in 100+ degree weather with it a lot.

"Whining noise from the rear???" Usually when that happens it means one of the kids has to pee. However you seem convinced it is a drive train issue.

Whines, while driving, and while in neutral but stops in park, but the transmission fluid is full, I say that eleminates everything that doesn't go round and round while stopped, so I would suspect the transmission. Fuel pump wouldn't stop just because you put put it in park IMHO.

Check for pinched, kinked transmission cooling lines to the radiator, consider changing the fluid and filter on the transmission take pictures of the pan and the little magnet that is there to grab all of the metal bits that wear off over the years. Does your transmission slip at all?

From your description Im willing to bet its your fuel pump...and your Autoparts guy doesnt sound all that bright, no offence

My jeep has the same syptoms that yours does, and Ive changed enough fuel pumps to know that mine is on its way out.
