Whining sound while driving
Hi all,
so I have an issue. My 1998 Cherokee which has been working fine recently developed a grinding sound when I press on the gas while in reverse. Everything else seemed to be fine until a short time later when I was driving it down the road and it suddenly started to consistently whine/howl mostly during deceleration. Can anyone figure out what it might be. I already checked the transmission fluid and that looked clean and good. The alternator was recently replaced so I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Should I check the TC fluid and Differential fluid? It’s got a LSD

Might want to look at your rear differential and associated U-joints. Open the pumpkin, drain, inspect and reseal and fill if everything is okay and metal not present in the oil. Check all U-joints for slack, looseness and grease up if no problems.

Your Jeep is obviously crying because it hates reversing, this other guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
In all seriousness though, consistent whining under throttle only in reverse is almost always a u-joint/differential problem like Sig said. My dad's LJ had the same problem you described and it turned out to be a U-Joint.
Might help to have someone listen to the jeep while you back up in a driveway or something to see if they can pinpoint roughly where the sound is coming from.
