who hates doin the tranny filter? what you think about this?

I would put it in the return line and temporarily plumb a pressure gauge in the pressure line to monitor how it is flowing.
They do.
Just like your house plumbing... if the valve at the curb is shut off by the water company, whether you turn the valve on the faucet doesn't matter.

I am confused---
I ordered an add-on external tranny cooler that mounts in front of the radiator...I have used these on several other vehicles.
Is this a waste of time and money and potentially dangerous to the tranny?????

What was originally being discussed was an external filter plumbed into the cooler lines. The filter would possibly have too much fluid-resistance, especially as the filter got dirty. The oil cooler bypass valve would then bypass the cooler and the transmission could overheat.
This is all in-theory... I'm hoping someone still tries it and plumbs a pressure gauge into the pressure line so we can all learn if it will work or not.

You will wish it was.
It is in the transmission, attached to the valve body where the "oil tubes" attach. When the valve bypasses, it dumps the pressure back to the pan.
Even ignoring the valve, it is still not a full-flow cooler. The greater restriction in the line/cooler, the less fluid will flow through the cooler.

The best I could do was take a picture of our service manual fluid diagram.
