Hey everyone I'm new to the forum and new to jeeps.
I picked up a 96 cherokee se with the 4.0l aw4 tranny and np231 t case this past week. After going through it everything works fine except the 4x4 light doesn't come on and I have this plug hanging down by the transmission. I have looked at all of the wiring diagrams and don't see a 2 pin plug with a white wire and a black wire with red stripe. All the plugs I can see on the tranny and t case have plugs in them. Where does this go? Thanks.

I looked at more wiring diagrams today and still cannot find where this goes. Does anyone know how many plugs are on the transmission?

In the 95 FSM I found a 2 pin connector (C423) for the 4WD indicator lamp with wires Red/Black and Grey/Yellow however this connector is at the indicator lamp. C403 goes to the 4WD switch on the box which has Grey/Orange and Black. These colours may have changed for your 96 so take a look at this diagram and see if it helps.

Thank you. I checked and the 4wd switch is plugged in. I jumped it to see if the 4x4 light would come on but it did not. I believe the bulb is burnt out. I pulled the shifter out to get a better look and the connector comes out of the tranny harness. I peeled the tape off and it's a grey with yellow stripe and a black with red stripe

Where does that wire feed back to if you follow it back?

I replaced the bulb and the 4x4 indicator turns on now. So it this just a excess plug off the harness

I can't really help you much more with this one then, good to hear you've got the light working though.

If it's of any worth to you, I also have a connector going to nothing so you're not alone, mine's just in the engine bay.

The only empty connector I've noticed under my hood is for the engine compartment light that I don't have. And it has some sort of stopper system in it anyway that I would have to figure out how to remove to add that option. Instead, I sometimes use a freebie Harbor Freight magnet lite and stick it to the hood in the light spot.

So the ac has been removed out of this cherokee. I was blessed to get pictures of the connectors in the engine bay. There all by the battery and come out of the main harness. I've been searching in my haynes manual all day and looking online and cant find any switches or sensors that have the corresponding colors.

My guess would be AC, temperature sensor for the overhead console, and maybe the battery temperature sensor.

If someone swaps a 242 out and replaces it with a 231, it can leave a spare connector of that type. (connector 357 blk/rd gray/yellow). Because the 242 has an extra connector (that matches that pinout and color index) in the mix, where as the 231 goes directly from the 4wd switch directly into the harness.

Is it possible someone swapped transfer cases in the past?

It is very possible after I pulled some tape off I found were the sensors on the t case are spliced into the old harness. So I believe it was swapped
