Default Whoops Sae 10w-30 instead of 10w30

I just accidentally filled my 1999 xj 4.0 with sae 10w-30 instead of 10w30, so many confusing opinions out there, I figured you guys would know what's up. Is it ok? I changed it for the drive from colorado to nevada and will be staying in nevada, northern so not as crazy hot.

What brand oil did you use? I am pretty sure sae 10-30 means the same thing as 10w30 they are just labeled different.

Castrol GTX, actually looking at the container now the full rating is SAE 10w-30

Welcome to CF.

SAE (The society of automotive engineers) is motor oil. 10-30 and 10W30 are the same.

Thank you for the reply and the welcome ) Kinda seems like they should remove that designation or just make em the same across the board, good to know though !

When they first started making multi-grade oils, people got confused what 10-30 meant so they added the "w" to signify "winter", cold. They went on to explain a 10w-30 oil flows like a straight 10 weight oil when cold, but retains the lubricity of a straight 30 weight when hot. At least that's how it was explained to me by my high school physics teacher.
