With or without towing package and ABS/Non-ABS were deciding factors in which axle they came equipped with

if you're looking at 96 and newer chances are you'll find mostly 8.25, unless it has ABS.

older models will mostly have the 35. from what I remember the housing is 2.5" diameter on the 35 while the 8.25 is around 3". Add on top of that stronger 29 splines shafts on some 96 and and all 97+ and you have a much stronger axle.
