Default Why does the area where the rear of my oil pan...

....join with the bell housing have oil leaking out?

Is this just the oil pan gasket leaking or is there a separate oil seal there.

Or is it just my rear main seal leaking down onto the oil pan?

Clean it thoroughly and keep an eye on it. It could be the rear main, or it could be the rear of the valve cover gasket leaking and running down onto the area.

Besides your oil pan there is also the rear main seal that seals the block where the crankshaft meets the block.

Yea, valve cover gasket is defiantly leaking a little, I'll install a new one.

Probably the rear main seal.

Since it needs it anyway, do the cheap thing first. But clean it good and watch for any more leaks to see where they come from. JMO

I was afraid of that, god forbid it would be anything simple.

Are you 100% sure it is not coming from the valve cover? From what you said I think it is a rms also, but get a mirror and make sure.

If it's the RMS it's not a big deal to replace, the big pita will be removing the oil pan. Buy an aftermarket double lip seal, since you will have your crankshaft grooved where the old seal is sitting. You are lucky you are at home, i had to do that in a parking lot 2000 miles away from home...

A little IS coming from the valve cover, changing the gasket next weekend, but RMS also I'd guess.

Check your oil filter adapter seals. I had major leakage dripping right where you describe and I was positive that it was my rear main seal. However some investigating showed that it was actually the adapter. after changing the seals there are no more drips under my 2000 XJ.

If the valve cover is wet change deal or just tighten the bolts, DO NOT overtighten. Check the Oil filter adapter and pressure sending unit. These are 2 areas that leak often and are also the real leak. If you do the RMS first and one of these is still leaking, you may be in danger of commiting suicide.

If it is the RMS... How much oil are you losing? Less than a quarter sized stain in the am, Start planning the repair 4-8 hours, no hurry yet. A little wetness on the underside of the Jeep is just the automatic lube system in action.

That, too... Although here in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, rust isn't usually much of a problem. Also known as, Advanced Trail Marking System, you alway can find your way back to camp.
