From personal expierience it may be the chain. Mine is shot and in 4 wheel it makes a grinding noise but still goes as long as im not getting on it. On mine there is a good size crack on the back half of the transfers case where it looks like the chain ripped it open. Like others said check the fluid levels but worry about getting it running right first engine wise. Why waste money on repairing the transfers case just to junk or sell it

you can do a leak down compression test but its kind of a PITA with the 2000 and 2001. You have to pull the coil pack pull the plug and then install the coil pack again. It wont be that bad if you are testing just one.

Damn I wish I got a free 00 XJ with that low of miles..
Worst case senerio it needs a head (if its cracked and has low compression) but $300-400 and a couple hours on a saturday that should get you set.
How does the oil look?
T-case could be a number of things, but I would just drain and refill the T-case and front diff fluid to see if that helps and will just cost the price of the fluids.

Okay so compression test results are back and new symptons. thought I should share the coolant is Brown thought it was just from not changing it but it does look kinda milky. Had a cylinder 5 misfire.
Cylinder 1. 70psi
2 70 psi
3 90 psi
4 70 psi
5 0 psi
6 90 psi

WTF!!! Seems right only its not the psi it should be. Guy at autozone where I rented the gauge said I could just step on gas pedal to open the throttle?

What do you guys think Rings, valves, head? What now?

Oh the "steping on the gas" part was for the compression test. Don't you need to have the throttle open? He said that way the throttle stayed open. Man I hope not cause she runs good its just that one cylinder. Do I open up the head? What should I look for?

sounds like a bad head or head gasket, I would replace the head and get new gaskets of course, tear it apart first to see what you got, also the 4 low must be engaged only when stopped in neutral. if it still grinds then it may have something going on. I would check everything on this vehicle,it is new to you and you will want to know what everything is doing, check differentials, tranny fluid levels, does it smell burnt? if it does flush the tranny replace the tranny filter and new fluid, check everything, but concentrate on getting the engine going right first. Is the coolant rusty?orangish but watery or is is oily? like oil is getting into the coolant?

Yeah the coolant is rusty and sort of oily.

I would tear the head off(just me) and see what is going on for sure. you might see the problem the minute the head is off. depends on how mechanical you are I guess. could be a gasket, could be the head, could be the cylinder or anything along those lines. assuming this is not your only means of travel ,just tear it down and see whats wrong and then build it back up. heck man even if the engine is toast, a reman engine is only like 1500 bucks and definatly worth fixing if the rest is in good shape. used engines can be had for around 800 for a decent one, grab some tools and get greasy!

if u still have the compression tester, dump a cap full of oil down the plug hole and check compression again. if it spikes up a decent bit higher then it is rings, not just head gasket.

X2....What it sounds like to me is a cracked head. Very common thing for 00-01 year cherokee's but usually they crack between cylinders 3 and 4 instead of at 5. Also what color are your spark plugs and do they have oil on them?
