I did a little Internet research and it appears you might be right. However, I couldn't find much on the holes I have. It's still hard to believe. It's definitely not precision engineering...

After casting, they are broken out by a punch and a hammer by a line worker before the engine is assembled.

Thanks. You figure they could have drilled the block instead of that. Oh well. Then I guess I still haven't found where all the coolant went and how it met the oil. The head is cracked, but, water didn't get a chance to cycle since the motor wasn't started. Plus that hairline crack wouldn't explains gallons of water dumping into the oil before the vehicle was even started...hmm...I guess I need to keep digging.

If they drilled it, it would just be more metal shavings that could get into small crevices and passages.

The holes don't have to be precise, they just have to work.

Have any idea where to check to fun out how my oil and coolant are mixing? I'm assuming it's the block and not the head....if my train of thought is correct.

I'm wondering if my original hypothesis of the block being shot was incorrect.

Could be either or both. Could be in an internal hidden passage that you can't see.

I got lazy yesterday and didn't pull the pan. When I turned the motor over and got soaked in oil I quit. Ha. Let it drain out overnight so I can clean up once.

I'll pull it tonight and see what I see. Wanna pull the crankshaft and camshaft anyway. Could always use spare parts seeing as how I apparently enjoy killing motors. Seems like it's not worth the risk re-building the block.

Now I'm stumped. Just pulled the oil pan and couldn't find a crack. More likely a hole given how fast water entered the oil. However, nothing. Turned it back over and inspected as much of the water jacket as I could with a flashlight from the top. I found one hole similar to the ones next to lifters. I poured water in and couldn't get it to fall out of the bottom side. Just out the therm gasket.

Im stumped. Block appears to be fine. Maybe my problem was isolated to the head? Hard to believe.
