wont idle and stay running
A couple of weeks ago i took my 92 cherokee wheeling for the weekend. Every once in a while it would cut out or not idle. Sometimes when it was in park it would have to give it a little gas to stay running. When i got home i cleaned up the throttle body and idle air control valve with a tooth brush and carb cleaner. It worked fine for a day or 2 and then started again. I swapped the IAC with a spare from another motor and it would not run at all without giving it gas. So i put the original one back on. It is idleing very low now and will not stay running on its own. I wanted to get some advise before i start throwing money at it replacing things that dont need to be.

check the ballast resistor for the fuel pump for good connection or if it even works.
its on the driver fender in the engine compartment. take the 2 wire connectors off and bypass the resistor by connecting the 2 wires with another wire.
now turn the key on and try to start the truck. if it starts and runs. replace the ballast resistor. (do not drive it like this because you'll ruin the fuel pump. the reason its there is to lower the voltage on the fuel pump to keep it cool)
here is a picture of the ballast resistor.
its the white thing on the right.
let us know if this helps.

wont hurt to check although i doubt its your problem. when these go out even if you give the truck gas it wont stay running for more then a few seconds.
make sure your TPS is adjusted properly by using a voltmetor or disconnect the TPS and see if your problem is any better when its disconnected.

check the fuel pressure. it needs to be at 31 psi idle and 37 WOT.
if its not. then the fuel pressure regulator could be bad, bad fuel filter or even fuel pump. or a leak
