The "Won't Start Blues"
Jumped in my 94 Sport this morning to run into work.
Turned key to start motor and NOTHING.
No dimming lights not even the death-clicking.
I didn't have time to mess with it. I jumped on my two-wheel transportation and went to work.
Came home this afternoon. Checked relay and all possible fuses.
I had recently replaced the terminal ends on battery cables so I gave the ends a little twist...nothing. Jostled the cables...nothing.
Got out the BFH and gave the top of the starter (solenoid) a light tap w/handle end...IT LIVES.
DAPO had the starter replaced last year. I have the receipt in glovebox.
MAN, did the garage see this guy coming or what.
Looks like it's time to replace with a "decent" unit.
Are there any tips/tricks? Or is it a fairly straight-forward-> crawl, remove old, install new?
Any suggestions on a replacement? I only feel like doing this ONCE.
I'm gonna do a bit of window shopping to get a good price on a quality replacement.
Until then, I better leave that BFH handy.

Sry been pre-occupied. I would choose one from NAPA over any others. I would keep the core and take it to a automotive electrical shop to have it rebuilt and keep for your trail spare. Thats my plan with this starter if it fails on me.

I came across a starter (friend) for a 2000 Wrangler I6.
Almost identical with the exception of the ignition wire is on opposite side of solenoid.
Had it checked at AutoZone..in perfect condition.
I am gonna see if it will work. Old one has to come out anyway.
Anyone have any insight?
Right now I cannot scrounge the $200 for a good one...FREE (IF works on 94) is good.

After putting some OT in today (need money for my Jeep habit),
I came home and immediately got to working on the starter issue.
Disconnected positive lead and jacked it up.
Put a jackstand under...I will not work under a vehicle w/o at least one.
Slid my fat butt under and examined the situation.
A little tight but I am used to that.
I reached my hand up to the solenoid wire to determine the relative size tool I would need. It moved as soon as I touched it.
What? Loose? Covered in oil? (That last one was not a surprise).
Main lead and solenoid wire were both loose.
Cleaned up the area with some leftover brake cleaner and tightened up all the connections.
Reconnected the positive lead and popped the coil wire off the distributor cap (don't need it to start everytime, just crank).
After the first initial clicks it cranks. I tried it about 20-25 times to make sure.
So...FOR NOW, the problem APPEARS to have been corrected.
Dropped it back down on all 4, and cleaned off all the oil/grease from my hands.
OK, now I have the rest of the day...what next?
Oh yeah, start on the CCV oil catchcan and start work on getting more air into airbox. I believe I will make write-ups for those since I had good responses from the last one.
