I just did the IPF's and I will never go back to sealed beam. I did Autopals before and they were good but these are 10 times better. I will also be doing the wiring upgrade this weekend. These housings make a huge differance with the IPF J bulb. I thought about the HID route but the glare they would put off would be blinding to oncoming drivers. Go IPF or HELLA.

For what a HID conversion costs it darn well better be the best. Me I'd just do the IPF or Hella housings with some nice H4 bulps or Silverstar sealed beams. HID is great if you have deep pockets..

I bought the Delta H4 conversion kit w/Xenon bulbs. They seem to be great quality, but were kind of expensive. The Xenons are definitely brighter and carry much further than the nothing special halogens that I took out.
It still needs driving lights & pencil beams on rack, better fog lights, rear floods...it never ends.

I picked up a pair of projector light H4 housing on ebay for $30 shipped,
next, I went on craiglist, found a H4 xenon kit for $100 (one with HID low beam and halogen high beam on one bulb).
put them on, day and night difference!
total cost was $130 + about one hour of install because there is almost no place to mount the ballaster on the passenger side (i put it behind the bumper).

I have a set of IPF H4 housings and xenon bulbs that I bought from quadratec. Xenon bulbs are fine. Granted, some say that the XJ harness is weak, but i can work well.

FYI.. Be aware most HID conversions may not pass your state inspection (if you have one). If the projector and bulb are not properly matched, the cut angle and/or beam pattern may scatter, producing undesired results.
I'm very much for properly aligned systems , (I have a DOT complaint) HID conversion myself and DOT HID fogs. But badly matched or aligned systems cause problems for everyone.
Also be aware most systems don't provide a high beam option. So supplemental lighting may be desired.
Just something to be aware of when putting your system together.
Also to your original questions, OE bulbs in XJ's are 55/65 watt. HID bulbs are 35 watt. There are many after market options outside of these two, which can produce positive / negative results based on design etc.
As for Kelvin (color) I believe 4200k is the DOT preference, I'd recommend a range of 5500 to 8000k if compliance is not a concern.
