XJ ABS or NO ABS
Im looking at buying this jeep and little inpatient trying to figure out if it has a d35 rear axle or an 8.25 he claims it has abs but he said the light never worked so that got me thinking does anyone know if they just use a universal gauge cluster or if they have different clusters for abs and non abs vehicle i would think theyd just use a universal but not hook it up if it doesnt have it to save money. I know i could have him send me pictures and i could figure out that wat but his camera isnt working so anyone know if the gauge cluster is universal?? Thanks!

DO NOT get one with ABS
Throughout all the years the ABS pretty much sucked, and youre stuck with the d35...
Good picture comparison of ABS vs Non ABS booster brake setup, and a nice writeup on a swap too...

Yes Cherokee gauge clusters are universal. If anyone was too look closely at theirs, they'd notice that they have silhouettes for every "option" the xj can come with. It's this way so when it needs to be replaced, it's one part number (depending on years). Aside from checking the rear axle, you can also tell ABS by the extra cable that runs next to the front brake lines, it's what connects to the ABS sensors

Pop the hood and look between the air box and the master cylinder, if there is a big black box thing with a bunch of brake lines coming out it has abs. You could also look on the ends of the axles and see if it has the abs tone rings (looks like a cog wheel). Even if it has abs it can be removed fairly easily but like others have said you will have a D35.
