Usually a grounding issue when this happens. Switch to AM and see if it gets a lot worse. If you can hear it change with the RPMs, you have a bad ground, probably at the battery or at the fuse panel (inside).

Sounds like your fan bearing is ready to go. I think the fan motor is accessible from under the hood.

Default 1988 2.5 L throttle body Vacume line Mess

Hi Can anyone help me identify all of the vacuum lines on a 1988 2.5L throttle body XJ. I think a bunch of photos from a working system would be helpful. Or some hi res pictures from a workshop manual. I have nothing to compare mine with. My jeep has had many previous owners. Maintenance/upkeep had been neglected. I have attached some pictures that may help you see my dilemma.

Thank you 564. To help clarify my problem. I do not know how the part in picture 1 works. In your diagram I see 4 primary lines origionating at the intake manifold. when I look at my manifold it only has 2 inlits to plug lines. I think that part in picture 1 has something to do with my problem... Does it turn 2 vacuume primaries into 4?

Default check engin light

I was driving home from the auto parts store and a check engin light came on. How do I figure out what the code is? Do I need to have it scaned or is there some trick to it? I have a 96 cherokee country with 4L auto 4x4.

and where would be a good spot to mound a PA speaker?

why are there no good interior spots to lay a new ground??????

Default Two questions

I've got 2 questions for everyone and hopefully I can get some help. I've looked elsewhere but nothing is clear. I have a 99 cherokee and was wondering if anyone knows how to disconnect the passenger air bag? Second question. I was pulling into my dad's house friday and heard loud snapping sounds and then lost all my steering. I discovered that all 3 bolts on the gearbox snapped. I wasn't romping on the jeep when it happened just a casual turn. 1 bolt looked like it had been loose and slowly wore out and the hole it was in was rounded out. I replaced the bolts,put the gearbox in and now I can turn a little more than halfway to the right but I have unlimited travel to the left. Nothing looks bent or broken. Is there something I can adjust or is the gearbox fubar?

Well I've been trying to figure out some vibrations in my jeep and I'm trying to rule out my transmission by shifting it manually but I can't shift the shifter down to 1-2. It goes to 3rd fine but thats as far as it goes. I know its not the transmission because it did this with my old transmission as well. So any ideas would be great! I do have an extra shifter I may try comparing the two tomorrow. My xj is an 90 with the 4.0 aw4 np231. Thanks for any help.

You're not trying to shift down to 1-2 while driving are you? Just checking, cuz it ain't gonna go (catastrophic tranny damage will result). At a stop light/sign, drop it down to 1-2 and shift up

Default My Fuel Gauge Bounces Around and Doesn't Read Correctly

I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport 4x4 and it has the Gauge cluster that has a giant fuel gauge where the tach is supposed to be and dummy lights where there are supposed to be gauges. I'm looking into swapping a REAL cluster in at some point because I can't take it anymore. Anyways, I've noticed that whenever I accellerate my needle goes down and whenever I stop really fast my needle goes up. I have a 20 gallon tank and I can be driving around on E for 20 miles and notice that when I fill up; the pump says I'm putting in 18 gallons to top it off. Is my problem from a bad fuel tank component or is it just the cluster itself? If it's the cluster, I'm going to the pick n pull tomorrow morning and I'll just go buy one to put an end to it lol

There's tons you just have to find them like I did. I work at a car audio place so I'm always installing things like amps and subs. There are grounds EVERYWHERE behind the interior panels in the rear cargo area if you're looking to wire an amp or something.... If you're looking to mount some switches up front near the steering wheel, there is plenty of places to drill into. The best ground you're going to get is underneath the plastic by where the footwell is. It's right below where some cherokee's got tweeters with the accusound stereos. If you aren't familiar with what I'm trying to say as many of the XJs didn't have the Jensen package, I'm talking about the speaker grilles by the kick panels.
