Hi I replied to yours but can't see where my reply went to, so here we go again. My Cherokee is a 2002 4 cyl diesel sport 2.5. In South Africa "new" models are sometimes released up to two years after Europe. So might be confusing. My vin number is 1J4GMN8752W205910. My config is different to your pic. As you suggest I have a plate with 15mm bolt through the idler pulley and close by a 13mm nut (adjuster?). The plate has movement when loosened.
I slacked the two bolts off fitted the new belt then turned the adjuster fully in tightened it and the pulley bolt but it wouldn't take up enough slack. The belt is confirmed correct and it is fitted correctly. Any idea how I can get more tension, or the problem ?
Am new to the forum, so patience, please If I post incorrectly. Many thanks for your help.

The picture I posted is for the 4.0 or 2.5 gasser, not many on here are familiar with the TD but if you have a similar setup I'd suggest perhaps the belt is stretched or the wrong size. Normally for the gas models you back off the bolt on the pulley which lets you turn the adjuster freely, then tighten the adjuster as far as you can get it, then re-tighten the bolt on the pulley.
Baie dankie - vin no is correct and it isn't a Grand Cherokee. The brand new belt from the agents is, they insist, the right one and it's fitted exactly to the diagram. The adjuster and the pulley are on the same moulded unit and doing what you said leaves me just short of an acceptable tension with the adjuster screwed right in. It's a head banger.
If I loosen the power steering pump on this model (or the alternator) will there be any movement that will take up the slack? Regards

While were talking about serpentine belts, mine makes a sort of clicking noise that is rhythmic. Its been happening for a while now. I tightened the belt on day and that made it kinda go away. The belt is only about 6 months old. The sound stays around even when i put tension on it when i push the gas. Any ideas? Maybe a loose pulley?

lift installation problem
hey guys i have an 01 cherokee an im installing a mrough county 6.5 on it. the back lift is finished an the front is almost done, but i am stuck on one thing. i cant line up the new lower control arms, the upper control arms are on an the springs are in but i cant line up the lower control arms. it looks like the diff is tilted foward but i cant pull it back because of the tension from the springs. anybody have any suggestions or an easy way to fix this?

We used a recovery strap to a jeep wrapped around the axle. Gets a little hairy but you lose the danger of a ratchet strap breaking on the ratchet. Some like to use the jeep because there is a bit more of control being you can go forwards and back.
