or just grab a 29 spline c8.25 from a 97-01 XJ. Bolt in swap (just make sure it has the same gear ratio). Very close to the strength of a d44 or F8.8, and good for 35" tires.

Do 27 and 29 splines use identical drive shafts?

Yes. The only difference is the carrier and shafts.

I'll probably have to expand my search. Last time I went to the JY near my house, there were 3 XJ's and neither had axles.

forums and local groups are good places to get axles, especially stock ones. Check the classified posts you might get lucky. Expect to pay about $125 for a complete stock axle, more if it has upgrades.

Can I assume YJ's used the 8.25? I'm in a local Jeep group here in Houston and it pretty much consists of Wrangler people.

they did not. Only cherokee's and liberty's. And you don't want the liberty ones (coil sprung)

Ok. Damn, I'm beginning to love this forum. Great info. I think I'm going to head to the JY this weekend. I'm also on the hunt for a roof rack. Mine did not come with one from the factory.

Well... say goodbye to any hope of finding a HP D30

However, the Liberty C8.25 has disc brakes on some models 29 spline shafts too, so if you find them in a JY you can pinch those parts
