I need to pull my neutral safety switch and clean it. My wife's Cherokee apparently will not start when I do not drive it and am 45 min. away at work. I have no trouble starting it because I know where to put the shifter. Anyway, is there anything I should know before undertaking such an endeavor? I would like to buy one and put it on, but them things are expensive. Will try to cheap fix first. Thanks
Here is what mine looked like after i fixed it. It was busted up pretty good. 150,000 miles. It is not a difficult task to do what I did. I filled in the area with the contacts with JB Weld. Let it cure completely. Then I sanded it all down until the contact were visible. Now it is all smooth and works perfectly. One part of the switch had broken off and I used JB Weld to fix that also.
I cannot find the pic of my contact part, but the pic I posted is just like mine. Mine was all pitted and not any where near smooth which is why the switch part broke. The JB Weld filled in all of the pitting and it is easy to sand down. Once the JB Weld was sanded down to where the contacts started to appear, I stopped sanding.

97 Cherokee Limited 4.0L
Just signed up on here today and have a question about wifes 97 Limited 4.0L.
We just purchased this a week ago and have not had any issues until 2 days ago. I am driving along and the jeep just shut off. Luckily I was next to a parking lot so coasted of busy road.
Jeep would not start after this. Acted like was not getting fire.
(The cap, wires and plugs were installed new by car dealer before we purchased.)
What I did in parking lot was check the wires going to coil (pressed in jiggled around etc. no missing connection clips) also jiggled around with the 2 wires going into side of distributer beneath cap. The coil wire going to cap felt securley seated at both ends.
Got back in jeep and it fired right up.
Are there any known issues regarding ignition in these I should check out.
My dad said something about pancake getting cracks in it and to check that.
Afraid for wife to drive now until I feel the problem is fixed correclty.
P.S. I am picking up a 96 XJ SE 2Dr tomorrow in Ohio. Cant wait!
Thank you

Pancake?
There are quite a few threads on here related to this sort of thing. You'll need to do some diagnosis if it keeps happening like verifying the presence of spark and fuel. The diagnostics are covered in the other threads. It is possible that your ASD relay is acting up. The most common failure with these symptoms is a Crankshaft Position Sensor.
