The water pump was replaced a week ago, pulled the thermostat out yesterday and dropped it in a pot of boiling water, seems to work fine. I don't know about the fan clutch, if does have an electric fan and it does come on. When I burp it, I make sure that the *** end of the jeep is quite a bit higher than the front and I burp it by unscrewing the temperature sensor on the back of the head.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. I would replace the mechanical fan clutch since they wear out over time. I upgraded to a ZJ Grand Cherokee clutch. You can find the part number with a Google search, but I don't have it handy.

As for open cooling.

Might be a dumb question, but whats the point of burping the system? To remove air? Ive asked my dad about it and he just says pour the coolant in and who cares.

Yes, it's to get the air out. 'Just pour the coolant in' is fine for 91+ with open cooling systems, but a Renix won't cool effectively with air in the system.

I always remove the coolant temp sensor in the back of the head before I fill from empty with coolant.

Empty as in rad or as in block and rad?

Either one. If I'm doing more than just topping it off I remove the sensor.

Make SURE you put the sensor back in before you start it...

And don't take the sensor out when it's hot, you'll burn the **** out of your hand like me.

I don't, but back of block, driver side, right next to the head. Has a 90° elbow with a single wire going into to wire loom.

It's less than an inch from the back right corner of the valve cover right on top of the head. Kind of a pain to get to.

Be careful not to break it. It's fragile.
