XJ Ask the Question Thread
Bout 90 of possible. Lol, no it's gonna be for crawling and hill descents. But system usually throws you outta first somewhere around 4200rpm so to stop that will keep you in first even at 5k rpm and help slow down with hills and not burn brakes out.
I've been in the mountains where my drums were practically useless cause they were so hot. Wasn't too long after hurricane Irene and Hal of upstate ny was erroded

Ok I've got a little bit of a problem...
Yesterday I decided to take out my XJ for some wheeling and it was running fine when I got out there. I got myself in a pretty hardcore little spot where I felt like the jeep was gonna roll (again). I dropped into 4low, and was exerting the jeep a little bit when It started smoking from under the hood. I've been doing some work on the cooling system so I thought I would look there first. Looking under the hood, I realized the radiator cap blew off. I replaced it, and was able to run the jeep and get it out of the tough spot. After I got out, however, I let the jeep cool down by letting it idle. As soon as the rpms dropped, the car died. I was able to start it (barely) by gasing it while it was turning over. While driving, I could here a ticking/knocking sound that was consistent with the rpms/speed of the vehicle. When the jeep died again, I called a buddy and had him jump me. I was able to make it home by revving it in neutral at lights but the ticking sound did not go away. Now the jeep doesnt even start with a jump. I checked the spark and the fuses. I have spark and all of the fuses are good.
Also, I noticed that when I was trying to start the jeep (persistently) smoke was coming out of the hood. I'm thinking that it was residual coolant burning off from the spill that I had but I'm not sure. I noticed it coming from down below the AC pump near the block but it was hard to see in the dark.
Any ideas?
Thanks guys

You need to ignore hick and see where the smoke is coming from. If it was cold it should not smoke. Did it overheat? Did you check the coolant level after it poped? Did you top it back up? Year of said jeep? Do you have a "cold air intake" that could of sucked up coolant? What all got wet when the cap flew off? This is the info we need. Not "herp derp oil?"

It's a 99. I couldn't check the level because it was too dark, it doesn't seem like that much coolant came out but I'm going to top it off tonight. I don't have a cold air but pretty much the entire engine compartment got wet. I don't think it was overheating because I've done vast amounts of work to the system. New radiator, water pump, hoses, cap, replaced the cylinder head, gaskets, and valve job. Also, I just recently did the 784 neon injector upgrade.

For the love of god..... any coolant lost is a big deal. Check the distributor cap. If it got wet inside it wont run for crap. Check the level of the coolant. You showered the engine bay in hot coolant. There is a possibility you killed the alternator. Since its a 99 did the check engine light come on?

The check engine doesn't come on. I did notice, however, that the lights all flash and dim when I'm turning the car over... Does the engine switch from battery to alternator right as you turn the ignition? Because I know that the lights dimming is a good indication if a bad alternator right?

I'm wondering if I should hose down the bay, let it dry, and spray the connections with electrical connection cleaner? My battery connects seem pretty solid. Any other way to test the alt?
