San Antonio people.. Or anyone in hot temp weather... Why is my 98 XJ over heating??? Fine in winter/spring weather.. Not in summer. Has new antifreeze, water pump, thermostat, hose... What am I missing? How can I keep it under 200-210 degrees?? HELP!!! Can't afford a new car and don't really want to blow a gasket.

Is your electric fan working? How old is your mechanical fan clutch? What about the radiator?

Fan is good.. Turns on. Maybe 2-3 years old. Radiator... Less than a year old, from Auto zone.

I just reread your first post. Is it hitting 210 and staying, or is it going higher? 210 is acceptable with these.

I don't know if that last post went through.. Sorry if this is a copy... I over heated 3 times today.. Last time it dumped all my coolant. And ran like crap till I poured more in. It actually scared me cause I thought I blew the head. But the oil still looks good. Today was the first actual hot day so I know its gonna happen again. Normally yes, it stays around 200 210.. But can I get it so it stays under 200?

210 degrees F is the normal operating temp, where is the coolant coming out of? If it's the cap replace it with a 16lb one. If you really want to you can install a 195 degree t/stat.

You don't want it o stay under 200f. Get the radiator cap and keep an eye on it. Now if it gets to 230+ then there's an issue but 210-218 is ok then electric fan goes on. And get a 195* thermostat not a 180 please and thank you

Sorry to thread jack, but on topic of overheating.

1990 xj 4.0 (W/ open cooling system swap.)

New 195 tstat
New 3 row rad
New waterpump
New hoses
A/c and heater core deleted
New zj clutch fan
Rear of hood raised 1" for cooling
New 16lb cap
Ac condenser removed, (nothing blocking rad)
Electric fan on toggle switch.

Like the previous OP, mine runs fine every season but summer. Az temps from 90-115*f. It can run find on some days and others it can get to 210 and then slowly creep to about 220-230 but even with the electric fan on i cant get the temp down. At stop lights it creeps during those times also.

Exactly. Drive thru.. Any standing still. I will try cap today. The thermo may have to wait till the weekend if I can. What if I run with no thermo? I've done it with my Toyota back in the day. Will that do anything to help?

Replaced that last year...

They tested fuel pressure at rail. It was very low. Replacing the fuel pump now. See what happens...

Very interested in this answer. I don't own a jeep yet; but learning about them and looking to buy. Have always built race car motors and street car motors. I always port heads, even on an old Ford Fiesta i drove just for s&g.. Have no issue porting it on a jeep and was curious if it was common or not.
