I feel like that coupled with the fact that I stop a few times on the way to school could be why I'm only getting 10 mpg.. Also, I've noticed that whenever I drive with the AC on my shifts are smoother, however, this could just be because it's warmed up a bit. Usually when the jeep shifts out of first it's a bit jerky.

So my two questions: could not reaching operating temperature give me bad MPG?
and why could the AC being on result in smoother shifts?
Short drives do get worse fuel mileage because your computer doesn't start reading info from your sensors until you hit operating temp. At that point, your system is in "closed loop" because it relies on it's own information gathering. Until that point (and on short drives), you stay in "open loop" which is dependant on preset tables of information to run the motor.

Yes. The PCM dumps a TON more fuel in until it's decided that everything has warmed up. This is one of the reasons that city commutes are so bad. The others are low speeds that aren't really in the efficiency band, and stop-and-go traffic. Stop-and-go is aggravated by automatic slushboxes since the torque converter doesn't lock very much.

First thing that pops into mind is that the condenser is in front of the radiator. Unless you've installed an aftermarket cooler, it's actually slightly heating the transmission fluid.

Is there anything I could do about it? Would changing the thermostat do any good?

I was thinking it had something to do with the higher RPM from the AC being on... but if there's no clear reason I'm just gonna go with it was already warmed up when I noticed it was shifting better.

Buy an electric vehicle for in-town commuting. It's always gonna be bad in city driving, especially if it's only for a few minutes.

I'm not too worried about it... I'm moving to college in a few months, so I won't have this problem anymore. Thanks guys.

So with my blinker issue, can I replace just this stick or is it something inside the column?

XJ Ask the Question Thread-image-1340805784.jpg

Or the blinker switch?

Not really an xj question but maybe some guys can help,

Found a 94 zj 4x4 v8 on craigslist. It does not run, owner says motor turns over but due to an electrical issue it does not run. Its 2-3" lift on 33mts with about 50% tread left. He said he will take 500 for it in the condition its in. Is it worth 500 to try and figure out if it runs and what it will take??

If i got it id strip it chop the roof, remove the doors and e joy the hell out of it after i got it figured out.

Dirt cheap rigs are the best because either way, your not out a fortune. If its an arizona jeep with no rust and mostly complete, Id go for it especially if the tires arent dry rotted. A buddy of mine picked up a $300 xj and found a set of 35s for $500. He is $800 into it and loves it.

Yeah i picked up one of my xjs for $380 and now have about 600 ibto it between maintenance upgrades and tires.

Only reason im concerned with this one is because the v8. I know the 4.0 inside and out and have read so much on here that i know everywhere to start depending on the problem. I know nothing about the v8 grands. But i may just buy it for the tires for my current rig and just hope i can figure out the running issue.

can a 2wd be converted to a 4wd....of course it can lol but how hard would it be? is it just adding another t-case and a shorter trans/housing and running the shifter?

I would think youd need a new front shaft also plus i dunno how ur front axle is on a 2wd. Is there just a plugged hole in the back of the diff or something for a shaft to connect to? May need a new front axle. Lol honestly i have no clue, im just curious because ive never seen a 2wd cherokee or what it looks like on the underside
