Default sorry for the long read

Jeep went down while towing the other day and when I looked under it was dripping quite a bit of fluid between engine and tranny. the whole tranny tunnel is covered with oil/tranny fluid [not sure which].
The jeep starts, does not heat up to high, and can be moved a little [probably more but not taking a chance, just re-parking it more out of the way]. I hear no meshing of any gearing or any metal on metal from the engine area but something definitely "went" and started smoking. I believe the smoke was more from contact with the heated surfaces than anything else.
I checked the oil today and I am only 1/2 qt. low which is not out of the norm. I have sufficient amount of tranny fluid although it is pretty dark.

I am getting to the question.....
the side of the engine block that the starter and filter is on is now covered in fluid but no spray higher up on VC. recently had head gasket done by CF friend and the XJ is a 91.
OK, the question, what is the range of problems that could be associated with these conditions? At first I thought I blew the tranny but now I am not really sure. I need to get into have it looked at but am wondering what the possibilities are. One guy I talked to said maybe blew valve seals???

Next question is whether a 4.0 from a 98 will match up on a 91 XJ. I do have an extra tranny that I would swap out at the time that I got from Alec [MD boards] so it could be a chance to simply dump all the old stuff and get some life back it my XJ.
Thanks and sorry for the long read.

First thing i would do is clean all the oil off and let idle for ten min (if possible) to see were the oil is really coming from. Try not to use degreaser cause if you don't rinse it completely it will eat away at your seals
As for the engine the block will def fit
I would suggest using your old intake and exhaust cause i do believe the fuel line set up is different

This is what bothers me, particularly. Ya know...when it's the same person asking the same question.
