I have an 01 auto with manual 4x4. We just drove it to town to get it tagged, and titled. The front axle chunk is smoking like hell, and my abslights on. I ain't sure if their related. Can it be stuck in 4x4? It turns like **** on pavement but it's clearly in 2wd. I've moved it twice checking... I want sure what to do. This is the first trip I've made in it.

If your not lifted at all they might rub some of the flares on bumps/while turning. Not 100% on that.
You should totally lift that mail carrier though.I always thought it'd be funny to see an rhd xj, 6" lift 33s painted USPS logos on the side... delivering mail. Lol

Sorry, missed that you said the diff is what's hot...
There is definitely a prolem, remove your diff cover (after you buy some gear oil and rtv sealant to re-seal it) and see what's going on.

I have another 25 miles to drive back home, hope it don't break anything else. It either popped in the transfer case or the gears in the front axle.

In 4wheel drive on dry pavement I'd say yea.
Have you looked under to see if the tcase linkage is connected? You could always check there too if its in 2wd or not...
The shift link (metal tab sticking out of tcase) should be pointed towards the front of the jeep, make sure its all the way forward as it can be.
