If you're at 242 degrees on the highway hood vents aren't the solution. Somethings wrong.

Hood vents don't affect coolant temperature. They release ambient heat from the engine bay to extend the life of sensors and hoses.

Give the cooling system some TLC, flush it and give it new coolant. Replace any worn parts.

Are your radiator and fan clutch original? If so, they were due for replacement about ten years ago. Last time it had a coolant flush? How old is the radiator cap?

Yes they are original. But my budget doesn't fit a new radiator. Last flush was 4 months ago. Its a newly rebuilt engine so it didn't need to be flushed but I flushed the radiator when it was out. It is a new radiator cap.

Hmm, how's the t-stat? I don't think the fan clutch would come into play if this is happening on the highway.

Would putting in a transmission cooler help the engine any? Or would it cause the engine to over heat even more?

I would imagine make it worse, since the engine's radiator is getting less air and the air it does get on that area is warmer.

The radiator has coolant and trans fluid lines woven through it. They balance each other. A trans cooler before the rad would help because then the trans fluid through the rad would be cooler.
