What exactly is it doing? When you turn the key on are you getting power to the lights and radio? Is it trying to start at all or you get absolutely nothing when you turn the key? Does the radio go out as soon as you move to the start position and come back on when you let go?
Your friend was suggesting you bypass everything to see if it'll start.
If you're not comfortable doing this then don't... I don't want you to get run over.
Turn the key to the run position.
PUT THE JEEP IN PARK and set the parking brake.
Climb under the Jeep with a screw driver and short the small post to the big post with the positive wire that's headed to the battery.
Short the two posts that the orange lines point to in this picture.
If it starts then your NSS, starter relay or fuse is bad. Basically that narrows it down to one circuit instead of the entire ignition system and other issues. I'd bet on the NSS.
PLEASE DON'T RUN YOURSELF OVER
You can also hold the key in the start position and jiggle the shifter and neutral.

I took the starter off; hooked a set of jumper cables up to the battery and to the starter. Positive to the location of your orange lines and Negative to the body of the starter. Starter spinned as it should.
After that I checked to see if the engine was seized by turning it manually.

And off the NSS decides to crap on you while you drive your jeep can jump into a different gear and stay there. Least that's what the code said when I pulle it. Happened only once thankfully in the mountains

Cool! Can I check it by turning on the lights and see if the rear lights turn on or if the it moves in neutral? I will also try turning the ignition on and moving the shifter at same time. Does it matter that it is an automatic?

Mine went bad where if I went from r to d it would shut my jeep down. I could go backwards all day. No forward

Auto is what has a nss. 5 speeds only have a switch on the clutch peddle

Not exactly. You have to supply power to the small post to make the starter spin. Just touch a screw driver to both the posts that the orange wires are pointing to with the key ON and tell us what happens. Hold it there till the Jeep starts. Then go shift from Park to 1st with the Jeep off about 50 times then try to start it in neutral.
